ARFAK MOUNTAINS TREKKING Duration: 13 DAYS / 12 NIGHTS START/FINISH: JAKARTA Grade: MODERATE DAY 01 : ARRIVE IN JAKARTA Arrive in Jakarta, the guide will pick you up and take you to the hotel. (D) DAY 02 : JAKARTA – SORONG After breakfast we go directly to the airport to take the flight to Sorong. Stay at Irian Beach hotel. In the afternoon your guide will go to the local police station to obtain a travel permit known as surat keterangan jalan (make copies). You need to provide at least two photo passport size. (B,L,D) DAY 03 : SORONG - MANOKWARI In the morning after breakfast, we take a flight to Manokwari, and stay at Mutiara hotel, after lunch we drive around town to see Taman Gunung Meja, a protected forest with plenty of bird life and butterflies. Next stop will be Tugu Jepang, 1 km before the end of the trail, offers great views. In the afternoon we go Pantai Pasir Putih, about 5 km east of the town center, is a curved bay of white sand clear water, ideal for swimming and snorkeling (bring your own gear). (B,L,D) DAY 04 : MANOKWARI - WARMARE – MOKWAM After breakfast, we drive to Warmare, one hour ride by car. When we reach Warmare we can start trekking to Mokwam, with porters to carry supplies and gear, Mokwam can be reached in a long day’s trek by the direct route, or in two days at a more gentle pace, with a night of camping. (B,L,D) DAY 05 : STILL TREKKING – MOKWAM Mokwam located in Arfak mountains, isolated from other mountain ranges the Arfaks are home to some of the most spectacular birds and butterflies on earth. (B,L,D) DAY 06 - 07 : MOKWAM VILLAGE A couple of nights in the WWF hut at Mokwam will give time to view at the natural wonders in the surrounding mountains, and exploration of the village and neigborhood. (B,L,D) DAY 08 : RUGGED TREKKING IN RAIN FOREST The return journey from Mokwam starts down the steeply sloping airstrip, across a deep ravine, through Kwao village and down to the Prafi river. Here, as you cross over the rapidly deteriorating bridge or get wet feet. (B,L,D) DAY 09 : STILL TREKKING IN RAIN FOREST A tough scramble up 1000m to the ridge between Gunung Nggribou and Gunung Umtjin then follows, with occasional fine views over the numerous ridges of the Arfak range. On reaching the Nggribou ridge, drop down 500m to Binibei where there is a single-roomed hut. If rain is falling, as is usual, in the afternoons at least, the hut might be preferable as the porters will light fires inside for drying out and boiling up a vat of rice and vegetables. (B,L,D) DAY 10 : RAIN FOREST – WARMARE You may wish to take a day off to explore the ridge, the hut is precariously positioned in a small clearing on the steep mountain-side. The clear early morning view down to Manokwari and the ocean is spectacular and there is usually a hive of bird activity all around. When you reach the main road near Warmare; it should be easy to hitch a lift on a passing vehicle back to Manokwari. (B,L,D) DAY 11 : WARMARE – MANOKWARI One hour drive to Manokwari, and stay in Irian Beach hotel, you may want to shower and rest. (B,L,D) DAY 12 : MANOKWARI – SORONG In the morning we take a flight back to Sorong and stay in Irian Beach hotel, rest assured. (B,L,D) DAY 13 : SORONG - JAKARTA After you buy souvenirs and take pictures and say goodbye, we leave Papua and take a flight to Jakarta, stay in a hotel and it’s your free programs.
