The Mentawai archipelago form part of a chain of non-volcanic islands, running parallel to Sumatra about 100 km off the West coast. There are large inhabited islands in the group. Siberut (4,480 sq. km) – Sipora (845 sq. km) north and south Pagi (together 11,675 sq. km). They are covered in dense tropical rainforest with isolated farming settlements scattered along the river valley until quite recently the people who lives here retained many stone age traditions that were exceptionally archaic but nevertheless remarkably complex. Nowadays, most Mentawains islands are descended from some of the earliest groups of people who have migrated to Indonesia several thousand years ago. They have preserved a neolithic austronesian culture with some bronze age elements which was virtually unaffected by subsequent Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic cultural influences. The Mentawains people are fond of adornment sand tattoos because they believe that the body that houses the soul should be attractive. " Moile … Moile.. Be good to your soul...
